The MMPC will host the 28th IPH Conference

80 historians from around the world celebrate the biannual conference at the museum

In 1965, just four years after its inauguration, the Museu-Molí Paperer held its first international event, the biennial conference of the IPH (International Paper Historians Association). Forty years later, the Museum is again host to the meeting of this most prestigious organisation. From the 5 to 8 October, 2006, Capellades-Montserrat-Barcelona are again the host towns for more than 80 experts who are expected from around the world. This time, the meeting will be structured around three themes, Hispano-Arab paper, an ambit of special interest to experts both from southern Europe and North Africa; ‘Paper Museums an their significance’; and ‘Dating documents and works of art on contemporary paper’.

300.000 € investment for new facilities at the Museum

The Museum will have new exhibitions, lecture theatre, reception and shop in 2006.

The Generalitat de Catalunya, the Diputació de Barcelona and Social Projects of the Caixa de Terrassa and the Caixa Catalunya will fund the new facilities that the Museum will open during 2006. A total of 300,000 € is being spent to complete the outstanding work to finish the new permanent exhibition hall, which will show the visitor the relationship that paper has maintained over history with the different printing systems. There is a project for a new room to show the manufacture of paper in the 20th and 21st centuries. There will be a new lecture theatre with seating for 80 people incorporating all the modern multimedia elements so as to hold every kind of meeting, conference or seminar. There will also be simultaneous translation facilities, a basic element for the Museum which has from the beginning hosted international events, such as the paper-making workshops that it holds each year, or the international conference of the IPH in October. There is also investment in a remodelled reception area and museum shop so as to incorporate a point of tourist information and make it into a more dynamic space.

The Museum had 31,150 visitors in 2005

Students come with their schools, and then return with their parents on the weekend

As in previous years, the annual accounts have shown that the 2005 visitor figures have stayed above 30,000. Of these, the bulk is made up of school groups who were a total of 21,450. Many schools programme a visit every year or every two years, as one or two year groups make the trip together. Others opt for a visit to the Museum by the whole school. A smaller number of visitors are made up of groups of seniors, parents associations, summer schools and businesses, which form a total of 5,108 visitors. The rest are 4,592 individual visitors who come either by themselves, as couples or above all in family groups, to take advantage of the family workshops on the weekend when parents and their children can make a sheet of paper as they have seen during the visit. Finally, a further 2,743 visitors came to see the eight temporary exhibitions that the Museum put on during 2005.
With the opening of the new exhibitions spaces, there will be more room and we can expect to receive more visitors.
